Pow Day in Colorado – Weekend Warrior

Pow Day

Big Time Snow Storm

This 2018-2019 ski season has been way better than last, especially if you’re looking for a pow day.  During early March, Colorado had a record-breaking storm that dumped several feet of snow, and I was lucky enough to be there.  I was even more lucky to make it out to the resorts to meet up with some friends and family.

You can also find my earlier trip to Colorado HERE.  It will go into more detail about the area, resorts and things going on.

Snow gods incoming

Why lucky?

Because of the massive amounts of pure pow blanketing all of Summit County, avalanche mitigation was in full effect.  The main highway out was closed off, and getting to the resorts was challenging.  The shuttle service I took even had to reroute both outbound and inbound from Denver International.  Crazy driving, but even crazier skiing conditions.  A pow day is serious business.

First Stop - Breck

So let’s get right to the real stuff.  After flying in Thursday, Friday was the first ski day.  I met up with some buddies at Breck, and ripped some runs until we couldn’t feel our legs.  The snow was deep, and you could hear the cannon blasts (or whatever they use to check for avalanches) going off at the top.  First run was taking the t-bar to the peak and scouting out the goldmines.  We found some awesome areas we were able to hit before chair lifts closed for more avalanche control.  It seemed to be a race against time.

No pow day is complete either without some mid-mountain cold snacks with the crew.  There was little hydration to counter the activacion, so taxation inevitably occurred.  Not to worry though, the pow day was just too good to really care about anything else other than sending our bodies, slightly out of control, down that fluffy goodness.  Scorpion season was in full effect.

Keystone Park Day

I spent the remaining two days at Keystone with the fam, where pow day was slowly subsiding.  But when the freshies start to fade, there is always park.  The condo was in prime real estate location, and walking distance to the lifts.  This was a godsend, especially in the mornings when the body is quite sore from sends.

Keystone’s A51 park was great this year, too.  On top of that, I had some sick skis by Rocky Mountain Underground (RMU) that have been the best I’ve ridden yet.  They were super lightweight, flexible and basically the park ski I’ve been looking for.  Shreddy times for sure.

You can check out their gear HERE.

After warming up the ‘ol legs on some runs with the fam each morning, it was off to the park with Mr. Smitty.  We got some serious laps in, hitting the jump lines, boxes and rails.  Overall, it was a solid progression session, with some bails too (of course!).  The 3’s are looking nice.

To wrap it up, it couldn’t have been better timing to hit Colorado resorts on a pow day and spend it with friends and fam.  The trips never get boring and I hope there are many more to come.
